Do Good People Go To Heaven?
Scott A Bradley
I remember a little jingle my sister used to sing about a cemetery "My Name is Harry Cemetery, One day you'll have to see me... Good People go to Heaven, bad people go to Hell" were some of the lyrics of the song.
Many people feel however, that Heaven is for "Good" People and that being good is what guarantees one to go there. In every faith and religion the idea is to be a good Christian, Moslem, Hindu, Buddhist or Jew, hoping that if one's good outweighs one's bad they will be accepted into the kingdom. This, however, is a false hope!!! Even if this was true, what we fail to understand is that in the sight of an all-righteous God, all unrighteous is sin, and therefore disqualifies us from Heaven. The Bible says, "All Have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23) and "There is none righteous, No, not one" (Romans 3:10).
This eliminates the idea that one is or can ever be "good enough" when in the eyes of a righteous God we all, no matter what our religion, race gender or nationality, are sinners.
Religion tries to make us good. It is the idea that if I could be good at my religion and serve it faithfully, follow the rules, it will make me good. And some are faithful and good, winning the admiration of all who observe us. But God knows all of our secrets and weakness.
Have you noticed that when the bible told the stories of all of its famous persons, like Adam, Noah, Moses, David, etc it not only told of their triumphs, but it also spoke of their failures and weaknesses. Even Jesus 12 Apostle had them. What if all of those people lived among us today, and we knew what we know about them? How would we treat them. Would we allow Noah to speak to us in our churches knowing he cursed his grandson in a drunken stupor? Or Abraham, knowing that he had a child by a woman other than his wife? Or Moses who killed a man? Or David who had an adulterous affair with another man's wife and had put a contract upon him to have him killed?
No matter how great the men, they were all flawed. Religion is man's attempt to get to God, But Jesus Christ is the manifestation of God's love for man. God's loves mankind and has made a provision for his redemption and salvation through His son Jesus Christ. It's not about religion, it's about a relationship through His son. Jesus Christ is all man and all God. As a man he lived a sinless and perfect life. So when we accept Christ as Lord & Savior God no longer looks at us and see sin, flaws and failure, He see the perfect reflection of His son.
Our good is not good enough the goodness of Christ and Christ alone is our redemption! So good people DO NOT GO TO HEAVEN!!! It is only by the redemptive work of Christ on the cross, the innocent man dying for the sins of the guilty, that qualifies our salvation. "For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not by works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9)
It's not our goodness that saves us, but the goodness of Christ alone. We cannot go to heaven because we are good, but because Christ is good to us. Accept Him as Lord and you will be saved!!! Reject Him and no matter how good you are you will still be eternally lost!!!
